Lake Purgatory Unit I subdivision is located in the northern part of La Plata County, Colorado.  The entrance to the area is via Lake Purgatory Drive, which is located 28 miles north of Durango, Colorado.  By proceeding north from Durango, follow US 550 to a point 2/10 of a mile north of mile post 48 and turn right onto Lake Purgatory Drive.  If you reach Durango Mountain Resort Ski area, you have gone too far.

If coming south from Silverton, Colorado, you will pass the Durango Mountain Ski Resort on the right before coming to the turn off.  There is a separate left turn lane at the entrance.  If you reach Silver Pick condominiums, you have gone too far.  

Follow Lake Purgatory Drive across a small bridge, then bear right at the first opportunity.  The road is not paved, and it will shortly take you past a small lake and begin its ascent to the entrance to Lake Purgatory Unit I.  This Lake Purgatory Unit I entrance is just under a mile from the highway turnoff.
